Leeds groove-death metal outfit Godeth kick off 2026 with “Vestige”, a ferocious new single that doubles down on the band’s crushing heaviness and political bite.
The UK underground metal scene has never been short on bands willing to push the volume into dangerous territory, but Leeds’ own Godeth have built a reputation for doing it with serious intent. “Vestige,” the band’s first release of 2026, makes one thing clear from the outset: subtlety is not part of the plan.
Instead, what you get is a barrage of groove-heavy death metal that hits with the force of a wrecking ball. “Vestige” leans hard into the band’s trademark mix of crushing riffs, hardcore energy and that thick, low-end groove that has become their calling card. It’s aggressive, relentless and deliberately overwhelming — exactly the kind of track designed to shake the walls of small venues and festival tents alike.
For fans already familiar with Godeth’s live shows, the song might sound recognisable. The band have been road-testing “Vestige” for months, letting it settle into their set before committing it to record.
“We are excited for Vestige to finally be released,” the band explain. “The song has been a popular staple of our live set for the last six months and we can't wait for our fans to hear the recorded version.”
They once again teamed up with producer Adam Gadsby to capture the track in the studio, aiming for something that fully reflects the intensity of their live sound.
“The song is aggressive, groovy and heavy, encapsulating everything we stand for as a band. Together we created our best sounding song to date.”
Lyrically, “Vestige” digs into the increasingly chaotic state of global politics. Rather than delivering a straight lecture, the band approach the subject through satire and dark humour — a coping mechanism for a world that often feels like it’s spiralling into misinformation and populism.
According to the band, the track is their way of pushing back against the noise. It’s angry, sarcastic and deliberately confrontational — a sonic middle finger aimed at the absurdity of modern headlines.
The new single follows a strong run for Godeth throughout 2025. Tracks like “Fleshmonger” and “Leeches” helped cement their growing reputation within the UK metal underground. “Leeches” in particular found unexpected traction on UK radio, landing on the playlist at Primordial Radio and pushing close to the station’s top ten chart.
Meanwhile the video for “Fleshmonger”, filmed at Leeds’ now-closed BOOM venue, captured the chaotic atmosphere of a Godeth show — sweaty, loud and welcoming in that particular way heavy music crowds tend to be.
Live performance has always been a major part of the band’s identity. Since forming in 2018, Godeth have developed a reputation for punishing live sets, including appearances at Bloodstock Open Air and gigs across the UK’s metal circuit.
Early 2026 already looks busy on that front. Fans can catch the band in London supporting Clearfall at the Amersham Arms, followed by a headline show in Manchester at Grand Central and another in York at the Fulford Arms.
The upcoming Manchester date will also mark the final show for bassist Jimmy Johnstone, who recently announced he will be leaving the band on amicable terms.
If this is the opening shot of Godeth’s 2026 campaign, it suggests the band are doubling down on the groove-laden brutality that’s been dragging new listeners into their orbit.
And judging by the sheer weight of this track, they’re not planning to let up anytime soon.
