Defences Unveil “Metamorphosis” Video as UK Alternative Metal Band Return With New Single

The Hertfordshire alt-metal outfit return with a cinematic new single about growth, reinvention and burning down the old self — just as they prepare to hit the road across the UK.

UK alternative metal band Defences have never shied away from emotional introspection, but their latest single “Metamorphosis” pushes that theme further than ever. Arriving alongside a new video, the track captures the band at a moment of evolution — musically and thematically — as they prepare to head out on tour across the UK and Europe.

For over a decade, the Hertfordshire group have been steadily carving out a space within the modern metalcore landscape. Across two EPs and three full-length albums, Defences have built a reputation for fusing synth-laden atmosphere with punishing riffs, creating a sound that balances electronic texture and alternative metal aggression. At the centre of it all is frontwoman Cherry Duesbury, whose distinctive and androgynous vocal style has become one of the band’s defining elements.

“Metamorphosis” taps directly into the band’s long-running obsession with personal transformation and self-reflection. Musically, it’s classic Defences: glossy synths weave around chugging guitars while the chorus explodes into something both melodic and cathartic. The track sits comfortably within the current wave of emotionally driven alt-metal and metalcore, where vulnerability sits alongside heaviness rather than being hidden behind it.

The band say the song is about embracing change, even when it’s uncomfortable.

“Metamorphosis is all about transformation, and surrendering to it,” the band explain. “We are evolutionary beings, constantly growing and adapting to the different paths life takes us down, constantly saying goodbye to old versions of ourselves. It can be painful, uncomfortable, and terrifying, even when we know it's meant for us. This song is a motivational reminder to keep going, a reminder that you get to write your own story, and sometimes that can mean burning everything down to start over.”

That sense of upheaval and renewal runs through the video too, leaning into the dramatic emotional tone that Defences have been refining across their catalogue.

The band’s steady rise hasn’t gone unnoticed. With more than 15 million streams under their belt and appearances at major UK festivals including Download Festival, Takedown Festival and Burn It Down Festival, Defences have quietly built a loyal following across the UK and Europe.

“Metamorphosis” arrives just as the band gear up for a busy stretch of touring. They kick things off on March 17 supporting Mason Hill on a run of UK dates, before hitting summer festivals across the UK and EU. Later in the year they’ll join German alt-metal outfit Future Palace for another UK tour.

With a sound that merges modern metalcore energy with cinematic synth layers — and a vocalist whose presence continues to set them apart — Defences feel less like a “new” band and more like one still evolving into its final form.

If “Metamorphosis” is anything to go by, they’re not done transforming yet.
